As summer quietly approaches, how can we make sure the kids have a fulfilling and meaningful summer vacation? From 20 July to 29 August 2026, the 'STEAM UP' Learning Resource Centre is launching a series of exciting 'summer holiday parent-child free workshops'. Through three major themed activities held every Monday to Wednesday and on selected Saturdays, parents and children can embark on a STEAM learning journey together, allowing children to explore physics, structural mechanics and green technology in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere, truly practicing the concept of 'learning through play' and filling their holidays with a sense of accomplishment and happy memories!
Three Themed Workshops to Inspire Future Little Scientists
This summer workshop has been carefully designed with three main themes, aiming to cultivate children's scientific thinking, hands-on skills and innovative spirit through interactive experiences:
Theme 1: Little Bridge Engineers - Summer Bridge Gathering
We travel across various bridges every day, but do we know the scientific secrets behind them? This workshop takes 'Hong Kong Bridges' as its theme, guiding children to learn about the structures of representative landmark bridges in Hong Kong from a relatable perspective, and introducing them to physics and architectural mechanics in a simple and easy-to-understand way. Children can also transform into little engineers, unleashing their limitless imagination to design a unique new landmark bridge for Hong Kong. Finally, they can test their hands-on abilities by turning their designs into bridge models and conducting a thrilling 'ultimate load-bearing test' to witness the pressure and load-bearing capacity of their creations, filling them with a sense of accomplishment as they apply scientific knowledge in a practical way!
Theme 2: Little Architects - Animal Summer Shelters
During this hot summer, everyone wants a cool and comfortable home, so we are calling on all 'Little Architects' to build new homes for our centre's star small animals (lizards and geckos) and take on this challenging yet heartfelt architectural task to ensure they can all enjoy a happy summer holiday together! In this activity, children will perform fun 'yoga poses' to physically understand the physics behind why buildings stand tall. They will also think from the 'user's' perspective, deeply exploring the ecological habits and summer cooling needs of lizards and geckos, and learning to apply design thinking to solve real-world problems. They can then turn their creative sketches into physical handmade houses, and even have the chance to invite the star animals to 'move in' and provide the most authentic and interesting user feedback!
Theme 3: Green Architecture - Mission Zero Carbon
In the face of climate change, green living is crucial. Children will become summer agents 'Zero Carbon' and embark on a mission in the green base, tackling diverse challenges! The activities will revolve around four core topics: zero-carbon architecture, urban native forests, green technology and construction safety. Through engaging interactive experiences and the 'Mission Zero Carbon' STEAM board game set in a zero-carbon construction site, children will be guided to deeply understand the concepts of sustainable architecture and low-carbon living, allowing them to actively apply STEAM knowledge in a fun and interactive way, and work together to unlock the low-carbon secrets of future green technology!
